The National Automobile Museum of Tasmania started in 1987. It was created by a man named Geoff Smedley and his wife Sylvia. Geoff was really good at working on carsβespecially old and rare ones. At first, the museum was in a small place called Waverley, just outside Launceston. People could visit and watch Geoff restoring cars right there in the museum.
In 1996, the museum moved into a bigger building in the city on Cimitiere Street. That gave them more space to show more cars, and even more people came to visit.
Then in 2019, the museum moved againβthis time to a brand-new building at 84 Lindsay Street, Invermay, right near Riverbend Park. It has more room for the cars and better displays, including the Hall of Muscle, which shows off powerful Australian muscle cars.
Today, the museum has cars from over 100 years ago, as well as newer sports cars and race cars. The vehicles change all the time, so thereβs always something new to see. Most of the cars that are on display are owned by people from Tasmania.
