Andrew Miedecke

Tasmanian born Andrew Miedecke’s first involvement in motorsport was at  age 15, when he joined the timing team at the 1962 Longford race meeting to distribute times to the visiting drivers.

After moving to the mainland Andrew raised enough money from buying, renovating and selling terrace houses to purchase a Lynx F3 open wheeler and then moved into the Formula Ford category, finishing second in the 1975 Driver to Europe Series.

He then moved up to Formula 2, in a Renmax BN7 for 1976, before moving to the UK to further his career.

Andrew raced extensively overseas from 1977 to the mid 80s competing in Britain, Macau (3rd in 1977) New Zealand and Malaysia, winning many races including the Malaysian Grand Prix (twice) 1981 and 1982.

He also campaigned a Ralt RT4 in the Australian Drivers Championship in 1981 (finishing 2nd with four wins and four  pole positions out of seven races), 1982 (3rd with two wins and four podiums out of 10 races) and 1983 (3rd with one win and three podiums out of five races) .

In 1984 and 1985 Andrew drove a Porsche 956 for John Fitzpatrick in two rounds of the World Endurance Championship, finishing 6th at Sandown and 4th in Malaysia.

At the beginning of 1987 Andrew decided to make the switch to Touring Car racing, joining forces with Don Smith to run a pair of Ford Sierra Cosworths.

Andrew proved to be very fast against local Sierra runners Dick Johnson and John Bowe, as well as established overseas drivers, but was frequently let down by reliability issues.

He took over the team in 1988, running two cars, with NZ driver Andrew Bagnell joining the team.

While Andrew’s speed was never in question, a litany of issues often ended a superb qualifying effort.

A win in the 1988 Promo Touring Car 500 at Pukekohe with Englishman Steve Soper was a highlight, but the frustration continued into 1989 with the only positive being a win with Bagnell in the Oran Park 300.

Andrew wound up the team at the end of 1989 and joined forces with the  Peter Brock Mobil 1 Racing Team, winning the Nissan Mobil series in 1990.

In 1991 and 1992 Andrew only drove in the endurance races with Bock and then with Alan Moffat from 1993 to 1995.

To keep his hand in Andrew  then turned his attention to tarmac rallying with a number of appearances in the famed Targa Tasmania event, culminating in an outright win in 1994 with co-driver Alan Taylor in a Porsche 944 Turbo Cup car

After finishing 3rd in the 1995 12 hour in a Porsche he joined Alan Jones racing for the 1996 season, and then Larkham Motorsport for a hard fought 3rd at the 1997 Bathurst 1000.

In 2001 and 2002 Andrew dominated the Australian V8 stock car series with 18 wins, the most of any driver

After a period away from the sport Andrew began racing in the popular Touring Car Masters Championship in the Whiteline Racing 1969 Chev Camaro.

Between 2010 and his final appearance in 2016, he competed in 138 races, scoring 21 race wins and eight round wins.

Up against category dominators John Bowe and Jim Richards, Andrew finished third in the 2011, 2012 and 2013 title chase and second to Bowe in 2014.

Andrew then began racing an Aston Martin GT3 in the 2015 Australian GT championship before winning the second round of the 2016 Australian Endurance Championship with his son George at Sydney Motorsport Park.

In 2018 Andrew won the Australian GT4 championship in an Aston Martin.

At the time of induction Andrew owned Miedecke Motorsport, campaigning a Mustang GT4 for his son George and Rylan Gray in the Australian GT championship .
