1970 Peugeot 404 Utility

Launched in 1960, the Peugeot 404 was powered by a 1618cc alloy-head inline four producing 72 horsepower, tied to a fully-synchronised column-shift four-speed manual. Excellent torque delivery allowed the 404 to cruise comfortably at 80mph. While 404 sedans and coupés received updates to both the interior and exterior throughout production, the utility remained largely unchanged from its introduction in 1967 until 1988. Built on a strengthened ladder-type chassis with leaf springs at the rear, the utility offered impressive durability and a payload of roughly 850 – 1000kg depending on the market. Its simple mechanical layout and over-engineered suspension earned it a reputation for reliability in harsh environments, especially in rural Europe, North Africa and South America. Many were assembled locally outside France, including in Kenya, Argentina and Australia, helping the 404 utility become a worldwide workhorse. Many Peugeots, including locally assembled 404s and later 504s, were built tough to handle Africa’s harsh conditions.
