ABOUT THE TMHF

The Tasmanian Motorsport Hall of Fame was first established in 1989 as a non-profit organisation to recognise outstanding achievements, contribution and service to motorsport in Tasmania from competitors and administrators.

In subsequent years, between one and three (but mostly two) new inductees were inducted into the hall of fame publicly at the annual Tasmanian Motorsports Awards Dinner.

Since 2021, the inductions have been held at a stand-alone function each year.

The inductees are selected by the Hall's independent board of directors, consisting of motorsport administrators, commentators, former competitors and journalists, who give their time voluntarily each year.

Inductees are decided from nominations received each year, plus previous nominations held from earlier years.

The Tasmanian Motorsport Hall of Fame aims to recognise outstanding service to motorsport in all facets of the sport including circuit racing, karting, speedway, motorcycle racing, off road, power boat racing and more.

The Hall of Fame is currently housed in the National Automobile Museum of Tasmania, in Launceston, in the form of a comprehensive digital display.

Professional mounting and framing for a presentation to inductees costs between $700 and $1000 a year, with additional costs including printing of stationery, enhancement and updating of the displays, and other minor administrative costs.

As the hall is a non-profit organisation, it has relied in the past heavily on corporate sponsorship, public support and donations.

Fortunately, Bendigo Bank generously agreed to offer corporate support for the Hall from 2009, ensuring its medium-term future, which concluded in 2023.

Since then, generous sponsors have included Giraffe Civil Contracting, Motorsports Tasmania, the Hobart Sporting Car Club, the MG Car Club of Tasmania, and the Historic Racing Car Club of Tasmania.

The board of directors is chaired by former Targa Tasmania winner, commentator and motorsport administrator Barry Oliver.

Well-known and respected multi-award-winning motorsport journalist, broadcaster, and former commentator and competitor Martin Agatyn is the executive officer of the board.

Both Barry and Martin have been directors of the hall of fame since its foundation in 1989.

Other directors are –

Chas Kelly – Former speedway driver, chairman of Latrobe Speedway Pty Ltd, former Targa Tasmania competitor and member of the National Automobile Museum of Australia board (where the display is housed).

Les Walkden – Former Tasmanian rally champion, Targa Tasmania competitor and circuit racer, and rally team owner.

Dennis (Herby) Burgess – Former state club and development officer for CAMS (Tas.), motorsport official and former circuit racing competitor and official.

Peter Killick – Former karting and circuit racing competitor, director of Motorsports Tasmania, chair of Baskerville Historics, and chair of the Baskerville Foundation.
