1969 KAWASAKI H1 500

When Kawasaki launched the H1 in 1969, it quickly established itself as the fastest production motorcycle available, solidifying Kawasaki's reputation as a high-performance brand. The H1’s innovative three-cylinder, two-stroke engine was groundbreaking, though its chassis and braking system lagged behind. With a rearward weight bias of 57%, the bike had a reputation for frequent wheelies, instability at high speeds, and an unmistakably loud, high-pitched sound. These characteristics earned it the iconic nickname “The Widowmaker.” The model on display was the first sold in Tasmania by Peter Douglas Kawasaki. Purchased by former scramble racing star Graham Turner for $995, it was used both for road commuting and production bike racing.
