2017 Dodge Viper ACR Extreme
Manufactured between 1992 and 2017, the Dodge Viper represented the pinnacle of American automotive performance. All generations of the Viper have been powered by a version of the Viper V10 engine, developed with help from Lamborghini (Chrysler owned Lamborghini during the development stages of the first Viper). Early Vipers displace 8.0 litres, while later cars grew to 8.3 litres, eventually to a staggering 8.4 litres, the vehicle on display being fitted with the largest version. This huge displacement engine produces over 645bhp and 600lb-ft of torque, enough to propel the car to 100km/h in just 3.5 seconds. The top speed of a Viper is dependent on the aerodynamic package fitted, with ‘non-extreme’ cars capable of 206mph, while a Viper fitted with the ‘extreme’ aero-package (as on display), is capable of 177mph. (283kph). The ‘extreme’ package produces 776kg of downforce, assisting the Viper to break 13 track records! While the 645bhp output is already impressive enough, an aftermarket exhaust has been fitted to this car, boosting power to a phenomenal 700bhp. The owner of this vehicle has been competing in Targa since 1998, achieving several class and category wins in a variety of cars, including a Mazda RX-7, a Porsche 911 and a Porsche Cayman GT4. After being purchased as a replacement for the Cayman, the Viper was first used by John and Janet Ireland in the 2018 Targa Barrier Reef event, achieving 6th outright. In 2019, it achieved 5th outright in Targa Tasmania, as well as 4th place in Targa High Country. It achieved an impressive 1st place in both the Adelaide Rally and the Snowy River Sprint in the same year. The car has been nicknamed ‘Whole Lotta Rosie’, a song by AC/DC about a well-proportioned woman, with a wide rear end – the same as the car!
